Valuable advice for graduating students

By Muḥaddith al-ʿAṣr Shaykh Muḥammad Yūnus Jownpūrī (b. 1355/1936 – )

A student from Australia was graduating from Darul Uloom Matliwala, Bharuch, Gujarat, India in 1411 Hijrī and requested Muḥaddith al-ʿAṣr Shaykh Muḥammad Yūnus Jownpūrī (b. 1355/1936 – ) for some advice. The following is a translation of the reply:

“Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings

My dear, you have studied the knowledge of Dīn (Islam). Therefore, you should choose this for yourself and strive to fulfil its expectations. I am writing a few points which I desire for myself and my friends.

  1. Strong regard for the correction of intention and sincerity.
  2. Perseverance in following the Sunnah.
  3. Total abstention from sins and staying distant from places of sin as much as possible.
  4. Engagement with the knowledge of Dīn and absolute concern to spread the Dīn.
  5. Attachment with Tablīgh as much as possible.
  6. Attachment with the people of Allah with the intention of reformation and purification, and acting on their advice.
  7. Concern for reconciliation between Muslims and complete abstinence from conflict.
  8. Punctuality on as many Nawāfil (optional prayers).
  9. Concern to develop the love of Allah within one’s self.

Muḥammad Yūnus, may he be forgiven
